Spain is situated south-western in Europe. Spain is One of Europe's largest countries; it is located on the Iberian Peninsula and also includes the Balearic and Canary islands. Spain's large central plateau is surrounded
by the Ebro River valley, the mountainous Catalonia region, the Mediterranean coastal region of Valencia, the Guadalquivir River valley, and the mountainous region extending from the Pyrenees to the Atlantic coast.
Spain is bordered on the west by Portugal; in the northeast it borders France, from which it is separated by the tiny principality of Andorra and by the great wall of the Pyrenees Mountains. Spain's only other land border
is in the far south with Gibraltar, an enclave that belonged to Spain until 1713, when it was ceded to Great Britain in the Treaty of Utrecht at the end of the War of the Spainish Succession. Elsewhere the country is
bounded by water: by the Mediterranean Sea to the east and southeast, by the Atlantic Ocean to the northwest and southwest, and by the Bay of Biscay (an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean) to the northwest. The Canary
Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwestern African mainland, and the Balearic Islands, in the Mediterranean, also form parts of Spain, as do Ceuta and Melilla, two small enclaves in North Africa (northern
Morocco) that Spain has ruled for centuries.

Travel to Spain is easy, in Spain accommodation plentiful, the climate in Spain is excellent, Spainish people relaxed, the beaches in Spain are long and sandy, the food and drink easy to come by and full of Spainish
regional variety. Spain is comprised of numerous autonomous regions, offering such variation within one country. The hundreds of miles of Mediterranean coastline ample opportunity to get off the beaten track, and the
country's vibrant cities and colourful festivals will amaze and delight even the most seasoned traveller in Spain. The best festivals are mostly concentrated between Semana and Santa. For a more provincial experience, the
Valencian town of Bunol goes wild every year with the La Tomatina festival, a time when the region's surplus tomatoes - following the annual harvest - are dumped on the streets and pelted about in a friendly riot. For
the lovers of art there are great museums and galleries in Spain meet Gaudi, Dali, Picasso, Goya and Velazquez proudly displayed in Madrid's museums. Spain is also a country rich in heritage and the historic
cities of Toledo, Salamanca, Seville and Granada promise a wealth of early Christian and Moorish buildings and monuments, as well as the remains of some incredible medieval sites. |

Spain can be enjoyable any time of year. Budget airlines and affordable fares have turned Spain into a beach resort heaven for northern Europeans wishing to escape their own damp climates. Barcelona is Spain's
showcase of the unique architectural style of Gaudi's bizarre organic turrets and balconies. Some may feel that the Canary and Balearic islands have been overrun by tourists but for those who love the heat enjoy going
to every party. Tenerife, Lanzarote and Majorca have become synonymous with cheap package holidays and warm beer. Ibiza's reputation has, for some, been tarnished by the revellers frequenting its famous dance
clubs and beach parties; however even here you will find many magical, unspoilt corners awaiting discovery. Spain's Pamplona is a unique experience of thundering streets that vibrate to the rhythm of man and beast
during the annual running of the bulls, and while the whole country celebrates each February with the Carnival, no place does it better than Sitges. Spain has six cities that have been declared Unesco World Heritage sites, more than any other country in the world.
